I Love The Big Island Of Hawaii

Posted by Christie on 8/23/2015

Every island in the Hawaiian Archipelago is unique and beautiful.  The island of Hawaii is the largest of the Hawaiian islands at 4,028 square miles, and is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined.   All of the Hawaiian islands have been created by volcanic activity and as you may know, the Big Island is still growing due to the volcanic activity taking place each day.  The Big Island is famous for its Kona coffee grown on western slopes of Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on the earth.  The photo above is one of my favorite places.  It was taken on the slopes of Mauna Loa where the coffee is grown looking out to the beautiful blue sea.  There are some awesome cafes where you can sit outside enjoying this beautiful view with a cup of incredible local Kona Coffee.

I love diving in Hawaii.  The water is so warm and clear.  However, the ocean surrounding the Big Island is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving.  This is a photo of Captain Cook Monument at Kealakekua Bay.  When I was there, my husband and I kayaked the bay escorted by dolphins.  The water there is shallow, crystal clear and full of ocean life.  The snorkeling was amazing.  I never wanted to get out!

I never expected to find a winery on the Big Island. However, the Volcano Winery in the town of Volcano is the first winery founded in Hawaii.  It is near the summit of the active shield volcano Kilauea.   This winery has a tasting room and they have created some delicious unique wines that are sold only in Hawaii.  My favorite is their Macadamia Nut Honey Wine and is a delicious dessert wine.

Just outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, it was a long drive from Kona, but so much fun to find such a unique place.  It was definitely worth the drive!  These were some of my favorite things to do on the Big Island.  I would love to hear what you did!
