Tamanu Oil, Green Gold of the South Pacific

The Polynesians have been aware of the wonderful regenerative and curative properties of tamanu oil for centuries and have regarded it as one of natureís sacred gifts.  The tamanu or kamani plant was one of the original canoe plants that were brought to Hawaii from the South Pacific islands during the early migrations of Polynesian settlers.

The tamanu tree flourishes along sandy shores of the Polyneisan islands and is a member of the mangosteen family. The tamanu nut must be allowed to fall naturally from the tree and the pale-colored nut kernels are then laid out on racks to cure for one to two months.  These kernels turn a brownish-red color and release a strong, rich green colored oil. This oil is then extracted by cold-pressing and filtration. Rich, tropical tamanu oil is wonderfully healing to the skin and is the traditional oil used by Polynesian women for promoting healthy, clear, blemish-free skin.

Tamanu nut oil hydrates dry skin and has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the swelling of rashes, insect bites, as well as sunburn. It is an intensive hydration treatment, and is ideal for dehydrated and mature skin, making it an excellent anti-aging product. It is known to be beneficial for skin conditions such as eczema, acne, acne scar reduction and psoriasis. One reason tamanu oil produces such incredible results is the fact that the it can reach all three layers of the skin: epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

Another component of tamanu oil is calophyllic acid. This acid is said to be the source of the oilís ability to heal scars. The calophyllic acid helps to regenerate skin and has been used to aid in wound healing after surgery. It is also known to have natural antibiotic properties as well as anti-fungal.

Tamanu oil is such a fantastic powerhouse, you will find it in the Kohana tropical moisture cremes and our new Tamanu Recovery Facial Oil.
