Tips to Healthier Skin

This year, one of my resolutions is to take better care of my skin.  In this world of busy lives, it is hard to give your skin the attention it needs.  But our skin is an important part of our body and one of the first things people notice about us.  It is a living organ and reflects what is going on inside.  So if we are not taking care of ourselves, our skin will reflect that on the outside.

There are many things that go into keeping our skin young-looking and healthy.  The first and most important thing is a good diet and healthy lifestyle.  Our skin reflects what we put in our bodies.  One of the most important parts of our diet is to keep hydrated and drink plenty of water.  If your diet is lacking in water over time, you may find your skin looking dry and unhealthy.  Drinking water can also help maintain digestive health and flush out toxins.  It is also very important to eat a well-balanced diet.  Many health experts believe that if your diet is lacking in certain foods, you may end up with a chronic skin problem such as acne and eczema.  It is very important to include foods high in antioxidants in your diet.  These antioxidants can help fight skin damaging free radicals like those you find from the sun.  Blueberries, strawberries and blackberries are foods rich in antioxidants and should be included in your diet.  It is also important to eat foods that fight inflammation.  Some foods that have an anti-inflammatory component are fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, whole grain foods, dark leafy greens, nuts, soy, low-fat dairy, peppers, tomatoes, and beets.  We should also be sure to stay away from processed foods and foods high in sugar.  These foods and compromise the body’s structure and lead to the development of skin problems.

The other important part of taking care of our skin is your daily skin regimen. My routine is comprised of five steps; cleanse, exfoliate, tone, moisturize and protecting with sunscreen. This will help your skin stay as youthful and healthy-looking as possible.

The Kohana Daily Care Regimen

Cleanse -  Cleanse using our cleansing milk.  The soothing agents of aloe, milk, chamomile distillate, lavender distillate and green tea extract make this cleanser ultra-mild and refreshing. The gentle natural exfoliating agents of organic sugar cane extract and fruit acids found in this cleanser leave your skin feeling clean but not stripped.

Exfoliate - Our bamboo facial scrub is a great and gentle way to exfoliate your face.  It removes the dead skin leaving your face feeling silky and revived.

Tone –Tone using Kohana’s herbal toner.  A skin care regimen is not complete without either a toner or astringent as part of the daily skin care. This step closes the pores, adjusts the pH of the skin and removes any remaining oil or dirt from the skin. Our 94% organic formula is great for all skin types, and is scented with soothing and refreshing lavender essential oil.

Moisturize – My favorite is the bamboo lemongrass coconut milk and honey lotion.  As I have gotten older, I have also noticed that the skin around my eyes has thinned and wrinkled, so on this area I use the peptide eye gel, which has become one of my favorite products.  I also like to use a hydrating masque such as the seaweed mud treatment masque a few times a month to help keep my skin looking soft and smooth, especially during these cold winter months.

Protect - The best thing to do is to stay out of the sun as much as possible and if you are in the sun, protect your skin with big hats and sunglasses.  But if you must be in the sun, protect your skin with a sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher.  If you have dry skin, there are many great sunblocks that are a lotion base and can help hydrate your skin.  If you have oily skin, you should use a gel based sunblock.

I hope that you find some of these tips helpful and start off your year on the right track to getting healthy and having great skin.  Aloha!
