Kukui Nut Oil

Grown throughout Polynesia, kukui nut oil has been used for centuries by the Hawaiians for its therapeutic benefits. Kukui nut oil is beneficial to the skin, soothing and softening it without leaving a greasy film. It has been used to treat wounds and burns, and some people feel it is beneficial for the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.

Macadamia Nut Oil

The chemical profile of macadamia nut oil is similar to human sebum. Itl is fabulous for dry and mature skin because of its fatty acid profile. Macadamia Nut Oil contains one of the highest sources of palmitoleic fatty acids, between 16 to 23%. It also contains palmitoleic acid, linoleic acid and oleic acid which aid in cell regeneration and moisturization. It contains plant phytosterols, which are the building blocks of our cell membrane. These sterols work the same way that cholesterol does in our skin, which is one of the reasons why macadamia nut oil has great skin penetration abilities. Macadamia nut oil is found in all of Kohana’s body scrubs.

Tamanu Oil

Native to Polynesia, the tamanu fruit is a member of the mangosteen family. The tamanu tree blooms twice yearly with fragrant, white flowers, which later yield clusters of yellow-skinned fruit in which a large nut is embedded. The tamanu fruit is well-regarded for its healing qualities. Natives believed the tamanu tree was a sacred gift of nature and that gods hid in its branches. It was their solution for skin protection from the sun, high humidity and ocean wind. Tamanu oil is found in Kohana Skin’s Tropical Moisture Crème.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer for the skin because it has a high moisture retaining capacity. Coconut oil contains mostly fats, so it acts as an emollient providing a softening and soothing effect. Coconut oil contains fatting acids, which are absorbed into the skin making it effective in soothing dry irritated skin. We love coconut oil at Kohana Skin. You will find it in our lip balms, lotions, tropical moisture cremes, cold processed soap and body scrubs.

Macadamia Nut Butter

Grown mainly in Hawaii, macadamia nut butter is produced from macadamia nut oil that has been pressed from the macadamia nut tree. Macadamia nut oil and butter are well suited for dry, rough skin and has a smoothing and regenerative effect on the skin. Kohana Skin uses macadamia nut butter in our body scrubs and lip balms.

Shea Butter

Extracted from the nut of the African shea tree, shea butter is made from the nut of the Karite tree, which grows on the African savannah. Shea butter is known to be a superb moisturizer is used to treat a variety of skin conditions. Shea butter is found in every bar of our cold processed soap.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter comes from the cacao bean which is found inside the cocoa pod that grows on the cacao tree. Cocoa butter is high in antioxidants, which help fight off free radicals, which are causes of skin stressers and signs of aging. Cocoa butter is high in fatty acids and hydrates the skin deeply is known to help skin irritations such as dermatitis and eczema.

Mango Butter

Mango butter is obtained from the mango fruit and has natural emollient properties that hydrate and nourish the skin. Mango butter is effective in restoring and maintaining moisture in the skin and hair as well as promoting cell regenerative. This super moisturizer is found in Kohana Skin’s Lip Butters.

Coffee Bean Butter

Coffee butter is produced by hydrogenating the cold pressed oil from roasted coffee beans with other vegetable oils. Coffee Oil is rich in phytosterols which promotes moisture retention in the skin and has also been found to be a powerful antioxidant. Coffee extract has been used for years by models in the fashion industry because it helps reduce the appearance of cellulite. This delicious smelling butter is found in our Kona Coffee Body Polish.

Alaea Hawaiian Sea Salt

Hawaiian red salt is considered to be a sacred salt because it comes from both the sea and earth.  It has been used traditionally in Hawaii in healing rituals for hundreds of years and is abundant with trace minerals. The salt, which comes from the Pacific Ocean that surrounds Hawaii is infused with red volcanic clay, and gives it an unusual red color. Kohana Skin uses Alaea sea salt in our Wild Ginger Alaea Salt Scrub and our Wild Ginger Alaea Bath Salts.

Cane Sugar

Cane sugar is used in our Kohana Skin body scrubs and our organic Cleansing Milk. Sugar produces glycolic acid, one of the natural alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliates the skin. Sugar granules gently exfoliates surface cells leaving the skin radiant and smooth.


Maui Cane Sugar

Grown on the Hawaiian island of Maui, naturally amber colored sugar cane called Maui gold is made by the slow boiling of layer upon layer of high colored sugar cane. Its distinct luster and depth of its crystals distinguish it from all other natural sugars. Kohana Skin uses this fabulous sugar in our Pineapple Paradise Body Polish.

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is loaded with fats, nutrients and minerals that are good for the skin and hair. It is loaded with protein which is great for damaged hair and skin. Coconut milk is used topically to moisturize, soothe and even to fight off bacteria. It’s a fat and water mixture, without any stickiness so soaks into your skin while leaving a light protective barrier.

Bamboo Powder Extract

Kohana Skin’s bamboo exfoliating extract is obtained from the bamboo tabashi stems, which is collected in the form of a thick liquid that crystallizes at room temperature. This crystalline powder is very rich in mineral salt and is an excellent source of silica. This extract is used in our facial scrub and our Bamboo Lemongrass Body Buff to gently slough dead cells and reveal healthy skin.

Kona Coffee

Luxurious treatments created from rich aromatic coffee have been offered in Hawaiian and mainland spas for years since recognizing its benefits in skincare. Antioxidant rich coffee beans provide properties that aid in restoring suppleness and improve skin texture. Legendary Kona coffee was first planted in the fertile volcanic soil of the Big Island of Hawaii in the early 1800’s. This fabulous ingredient has been incorporated into our Kona Coffee Body Polish to help improve circulation and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Papaya Enzymes

Papain comes from the green papaya just before it ripens. Papaya is a perfect source of a protein dissolving plant enzyme. This effective fruit enzyme dissolves dead and damaged skin cells leaving the skin, soft supple and smooth. Kohana’s organic Papaya Pineapple Enzyme Masque contains this gentle but effective enzyme.

Bromelian Enzymes

Pineapples contain bromelain, which is an ezyme found in the fruit and stem of the plant. Bromelain helps to break down dead, dry surface skin cells leading to softer, smoother skin. Kohana has incorporated bromelain into our Papaya Pineapple Enzyme Masque and our Pineapple Paradise Body Polish.


The noni plant is a small evergreen tree that grows along Hawaii’s beaches and throughout the South Pacific in forest areas up to 1,300 feet. Known as a superfruit, noni is rich in Vitamins A, C, E, B, B2, B6, B12, calcium, iron, niacin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, magnesuim, zinc, copper and other minerals. It helps maintain healthy skin, hair and scalp and is an ingredient in our Tropical Moisture Moisture Crème.

Passion Flower

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, this extract is used in skin care formulations to soothe and calm dry and mature skin conditions. Passion Flower extract is found in our Tropical Moisture Crème.
